The world’s hear went out for Luke the Great Dane last week, who was forced to starve after being tied up in the freezing cold. The poor animal was tied to a metal pole with no food or drink nearby. Police discovered the dog after being given an anonymous tip, and arrived to find Luke starving on the brink of death. Luke was forced to bite off his paw to survive.

Luke’s owners were charged with neglect, but even though Luke was transferred to the good people at Noah’s Arks Rescue, but he was so malnourished, there was concern as to whether doctors could safely perform the necessary operations.

Luckily, Luke’s condition improved, and he was able to have the necessary operation! He he now in recovery. His condition seems to be improving. The website announced:

“We have spoken to several prosthetic companies that believe they can make a workable prosthetic for Luke if we can stop the infection from spreading.  The place where Luke chewed his leg off does not leave us a lot of room to attach a, but we are hopeful one can be designed for our sweet boy.”

During the winter, animal abuse and neglect can hit much, much harder. The winter holds many hazards for dogs, and other animals. If you witness abuse, don’t hesitate to contact your local ASPCA or police department. And always remember to look for your pets at pet shelters, as there are always animals in need of loving homes.
