The veterinary community and loved ones are mourning the loss of Dr. John Ellis, a skilled and compassionate veterinarian who took his own life in November 2022. The 35-year-old faced mounting professional and personal challenges that left him overwhelmed, including the emotional toll of clients’ attitudes toward their pets’ care.
Dr. Ellis, described by colleagues as warm and dedicated, found it distressing when “rich” pet parents refused to pay for necessary treatments while others, with limited means, often sought help too late. According to his mother, Tina Ellis, a local councilor, these situations weighed heavily on him. She recounted his frustration, saying he was deeply affected by the stark contrast in attitudes toward animal care.
On the evening of his death, Dr. Ellis accessed a lethal drug under false pretenses, citing a need to euthanize a dog, and later used it to end his life. His ease of access to the medication prompted concerns from his father, who likened it to having access to a “loaded gun.” The coroner’s inquest echoed these concerns, urging tighter regulations on how veterinary professionals acquire such drugs.
Beyond his work struggles, Dr. Ellis faced personal difficulties, including financial stress and relationship challenges. Despite these hardships, he was remembered for his expertise and genuine care for animals. In a statement shared by suicide charity Amparo, his family urged others facing mental health challenges to seek Support, emphasizing the importance of not suffering in silence.
