In the sprawling city of Houston, Texas, Tena Lundquist Faust and Tama Lundquist, twin activists and philanthropists, were faced with a heart-wrenching sight – a distressing number of stray dogs roaming the streets. This “eye-opening” experience spurred them into action, determined to find a solution to the city’s homeless pet problem.
Through their strategic approach and passion, they have become beacons of hope for both the animals and the people affected by this crisis.

After moving to Houston from Minnesota, Tena Lundquist Faust was astounded by the apathy towards stray animals. Unlike her previous home in Minneapolis, where stray animals were rarely seen, Houston’s streets were teeming with 30, 40, or even 50 stray pets in a single day.
Their journey is now explored in the documentary “For the Animals,” a powerful film that delves into the sisters’ strategic approach to saving the dogs and cats on Houston’s streets. Directed by monk female filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhuti, the documentary has garnered attention, with actress and activist Alyssa Milano signing on as an executive producer due to her admiration for the filmmakers’ storytelling and the twin sisters’ dedication.
According to Tena Lundquist Faust, Houston’s stray animal crisis arises from a “perfect storm of issues.” The year-round breeding season, lack of belief in spaying and neutering, and the vast geographical expanse of Houston create an environment where stray animals thrive, making it challenging to rescue them from remote areas.
The consequences of this crisis have become far-reaching, extending beyond the well-being of the animals. As the number of hungry stray dogs increases, Houston residents face public health and safety risks, with instances of attacks reported. The issue has grown so significant that it demands immediate attention and comprehensive solutions.
The situation in Houston is reflective of a larger problem across the United States. With an average of 6.3 million animals entering the shelter system each year, pet homelessness has become a nationwide issue. Tena Lundquist Faust and Tama Lundquist, along with Alyssa Milano, hope that “For the Animals” will raise awareness about the severity of the problem and inspire people to take action
