The Humane League Launches the Animal Policy Alliance to Help Farmed Animals

The Animal Policy Alliance (APA) emerges as a champion for millions of animals raised for food in the United States. Launched by The Humane League, a nonprofit dedicated to ending the abuse of farm animals, the APA aims to combat large-scale animal cruelty through strategic policy change.

The APA operates as a coalition comprising 15 member organizations and counting, united in their mission to advocate for legislative reforms at the city, state, and federal levels. By fostering collaboration and providing resources, grants, and campaign strategies, the APA empowers its members to make meaningful connections with legislators and push for policies that prioritize the welfare of farmed animals.

Gabriel Wildgen, Senior Director of Public Policy at The Humane League, underscores the urgency of the APA’s mission, stating, “In public policy conversations and legislation in the U.S., farmed animals are tragically underrepresented.” The APA seeks to rectify this imbalance by leveraging momentum at the state and local levels, forging partnerships with grassroots organizations, and amplifying the voices of those advocating for change.

Already, the APA has achieved significant victories in its campaign to end animal cruelty. From banning octopus farming in Washington State to outlawing gestation and veal crates in New Jersey, member organizations have spearheaded legislative initiatives that have tangible impacts on the lives of farm animals. Additionally, successful advocacy efforts have thwarted detrimental bills and influenced policy decisions, such as persuading the USDA to update child nutrition meal patterns and opposing legislation that would undermine state and local bans on intensive animal confinement.

The APA’s active legislative campaigns reflect a diverse array of initiatives aimed at protecting farmed animals. These include campaigns targeting backyard slaughterhouses, advocating for fur bans, promoting plant-based school meals, and defending state laws against harmful factory farming interests. By championing these causes, the APA seeks to create a more compassionate and sustainable future for all beings.

Despite the absence of federal laws regulating the treatment of farm animals, the APA draws strength from the growing momentum of state-level legislation, consumer demand, and corporate welfare policies. With nearly 40% of egg-laying hens now free from cages in the U.S. as a result of such efforts, the APA remains steadfast in its commitment to driving further progress and effecting lasting change.
