The Grim Reality of Dairy Farming Revealed by a Reddit Post

In a recent post on the r/vegan subreddit, u/anon1839 shared a distressing account from their experience surveying regenerative agriculture. Their narrative painted a bleak picture of the dairy industry, highlighting the callous disposal of newborn calves as mere byproducts of profit-driven farming practices.

As they recounted driving past wheelie bins brimming with slain calves, the nonchalant reaction of their colleagues and the farmer they were accompanying was chilling. The farmer’s casual apology for the sight of dead calves, met with indifferent responses, serves as a reminder of the desensitization rampant in industries where sentient beings are reduced to mere commodities.

The juxtaposition drawn by u/anon1839 between their profound grief over the loss of their dog and the cavalier disposal of countless calves showed the evident disconnect between society’s perception of different species. While the death of a beloved pet elicits widespread sympathy and mourning, the routine slaughter of innocent animals in the name of profit is met with indifference, if not outright acceptance.

Here’s their story:

“I was with 3 colleagues and a farmer. We were doing a regenerative agriculture survey on how they could improve farming to make it better for biodiversity.

While driving around, we drove past two big wheelie bins filled to the brim with calves that had been shot and were disposed of – standard in dairy. No one even winked an eye. The farmer said ‘sorry about the dead calves’ but everyone just went on all jolly.

Last week my dog died and I’ve been grieving him massively – to see all the calves dumped so dismissively, like their life didn’t matter…. God it’s so awful. I’ve been vegan for 8 years and the cruelty never gets easier to see.

Anyway, I need to quit this job ASAP. Not just because of this, the pay is shit and we typically do work for golf courses, development sites, and farms – none of which are really great. It’s just horrible seeing folk so non caring.”

The comments on the post further underscore the prevailing sentiment among many vegans and Animal rights advocates: a sense of outrage and condemnation towards industries that prioritize profit over compassion. One commenter’s visceral reaction, equating those involved in large-scale animal agriculture to monsters and evil-doers, reflects the deep-seated moral repulsion felt by those who bear witness to such atrocities.

There is a pervasive culture of ignorance and apathy surrounding the realities of animal agriculture. Many consumers remain blissfully unaware or choose to turn a blind eye to the suffering inherent in the products they consume. This willful ignorance enables industries to continue their exploitative practices unabated.
