A new website has been launched by the Coalition to Illuminate and Address Animal Methods Bias (COLAAB) to support researchers aiming to publish nonanimal biomedical research. This platform provides guidance and resources to help researchers navigate the challenges posed by peer reviewers who often favor animal-based research methods.
The push for this resource stems from a growing concern about bias in academic publishing. According to Catharine E. Krebs, PhD, who leads COLAAB and works with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, half of the researchers surveyed reported being asked by reviewers to include animal experiments in their otherwise animal-free studies. This bias can delay publication or force researchers to submit to lower-impact journals, often at the expense of their work’s visibility and impact.
With the rise of nonanimal methods such as tissue chips and organoids—models derived from human cells—there is a growing need for systemic changes in how research is evaluated. While long-term solutions will require an overhaul of the broader biomedical community, Krebs emphasizes that researchers can take immediate action to improve their chances of publishing animal-free studies.
AnimalMethodsBias.org provides an array of tools to assist researchers in designing studies, preparing manuscripts, and responding to biased reviews. Key features of the site include:
- Experimental Resources: A database of animal-free platforms and tools.
- Preregistration: Guidelines on registering research plans before conducting experiments.
- Manuscript Preparation: Best practices for reporting findings in a way that avoids bias.
- Journal Database: A list of journals with a track record of accepting nonanimal research.
- Suggesting Reviewers: Tips on finding unbiased reviewers.
- Responding to Biased Reviews: Template responses to help researchers address biased feedback from reviewers.
- Reference Library: A collection of over 800 papers and resources relevant to animal-free research.
This dynamic resource is constantly updated to reflect advancements in nonanimal research methods. Originally published in Advanced Science, the Author Guide found on the website is now an evolving document designed to adapt alongside this fast-growing field.
