The first sighting was reported by Myriam Schenk on a Friday morning. “I saw the face and I said, ‘What is this?’” Schenk exclaimed. “I started taking a video and realized, ‘This is a manatee!’”

Bill Barnett and his wife Sharon, long-time residents of the area, also witnessed the unusual guest at the end of June. Bill remarked, “I grew up with manatees. This is the first one we’ve seen in the lake in the 15 years we’ve been here.”

The sighting has intrigued both residents and marine biologists. Experts explained that manatees can navigate inland through canals and storm drains, which is likely how this sea cow made its way to the lake. Despite its unusual location, the manatee appears to be in good health.

In 2021, a manatee was rescued from another Pembroke Pines lake because it was underweight and swimming erratically. Fortunately, the current visitor does not show any signs of distress. Marine biologists are keeping a close watch to ensure it remains healthy.

The presence of a manatee in an inland lake is rare but not impossible. According to marine biologists, lakes can provide a variety of food sources for manatees, making them suitable temporary habitats. This variety in diet can benefit the manatee, offering a mix of vegetation they would typically consume in coastal areas.

The community is embracing the unexpected visitor. Sharon Barnett expressed her amazement, “It’s beautiful and it’s amazing we have the opportunity to see it here.” Residents and biologists alike are monitoring the situation to ensure the manatee’s well-being.

As this gentle giant continues to explore its new environment, it serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways wildlife can adapt and survive, even in manmade settings. This sighting has brought excitement to Pembroke Pines and highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy waterways that can Support diverse marine life.

For now, the manatee remains a cherished guest in the Cedarwoods community, symbolizing hope and resilience in the face of an ever-changing environment.
