Justice has finally been served for Maya, a 9-year-old husky subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of Elizabeth Jaimes. The international organization In Defense of Animals has hailed the sentencing of Jaimes, who was charged with brutally beating Maya.
The ordeal began when Maya’s guardian noticed unexplained injuries on the elderly husky, prompting a vet’s recommendation to install a hidden camera. What the camera revealed was nothing short of horrifying: Jaimes repeatedly struck Maya with a rubber mallet, inflicting blunt force trauma that left the poor dog with a blinded eye and multiple bone fractures, including spinal injuries.
The abuse, which investigators believe started as early as October 2022, continued for months until the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department intervened on May 1, 2023. Jaimes was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a second-degree felony. Despite Jaimes’ attempt to justify her actions by claiming Maya growled at her, the evidence was irrefutable.
On May 10, justice was served as Jaimes was sentenced to 70.8 months incarceration, along with mandatory participation in an anger management program. Additionally, she will serve three years of probation, be registered with the Hillsborough County Animal Abuser Registry, and be banned from owning any animals in the future.
In Defense of Animals played a crucial role in advocating for Maya, sending a letter with over 15,000 signatures to State Attorney Susan Lopez, urging maximum prosecution and sentencing for Jaimes. Doll Stanley, Senior Justice for Animals Campaigner for In Defense of Animals, expressed gratitude towards the prosecution and the judge for their decisive actions.
“It’s a miracle that Maya survived, and we hope this sentence can help her and her family heal from the trauma,” Stanley stated. “When the justice system works for animals like this, it sends a strong message and prevents such horrors.”
