Dog Abuse Case in Singapore Ends in Jail Sentence

A domestic helper in Singapore, Junny Lal Awn Pui, was sentenced to nine months in jail after being found guilty of multiple acts of animal cruelty that led to the death of a poodle named Boyboy. The Myanmar national, 26, followed the abusive instructions of her employer, Heng, in handling the 15-year-old dog.

The abuse came to light earlier this year when Derrick Tan, president of the charity Voice for Animals, shared CCTV footage showing Junny hitting Boyboy. In the footage, she was seen using her hand and a rod-like object to strike the dog and suspending it by its harness from a balcony railing.

Boyboy, who had been adopted in 2015 and later kept at Heng’s home, was confined to the balcony and treated separately from Heng’s other pets. Heng instructed Junny to hit the dog if it ate without permission and to suspend it in sunlight to reduce odor. These acts, including repeated blows to the dog’s head, were captured on January 22, 2024.

Prosecutors presented veterinary evidence indicating the beatings caused severe pain, head trauma, and, ultimately, Boyboy’s death. CCTV footage showed the dog becoming motionless after the abuse, and it later succumbed to its injuries.

After the dog’s death, Heng took steps to dispose of evidence and delayed informing the dog’s parent, Lai, until after celebrating his birthday. Suspicious of Boyboy’s condition, Lai reviewed CCTV footage and contacted authorities.

Prosecutors emphasized the prolonged suffering inflicted on Boyboy, describing the cruelty as severe and unnecessary. Heng’s actions are under investigation to determine whether she will face legal consequences.
