Cruel Pigeon Shoot Causes Animal Welfare Groups to Call for Action

Over the weekend, the Quail Creek Hunting Ranch in Okeechobee, Florida, hosted a disturbing event known as the “Swamp Shoot-Out,” where approximately 15,000 pigeons were shot in a competitive spectacle. This event, which utilizes live animals as targets, has sparked outrage from Animal rights organizations.

Owned by Troy Link, CEO of Jack Link’s Meat Snacks, a beef jerky company, the shooting site witnessed a mass killing of live pigeons, drawing condemnation from various quarters. Live pigeon shoots are outlawed in many states due to their inherent cruelty, and organizations like Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Wellness Action have raised serious concerns about the legality of such events.

The recorded drone footage reveals a grim reality: pigeons launched from spring-loaded boxes are shot down as they attempt to flee, with many falling mere feet from their release point. Those wounded but not retrieved face abandonment, becoming easy pickings for birds of prey like bald eagles that inhabit the area. This poses not only a threat to wildlife but also leads to the poisoning of these creatures due to lead ammunition used in the shooting. The use of lead-based ammunition poses significant risks to animals that feed on the carcasses. Studies have shown that lead poisoning is a pervasive problem among wildlife, with implications for ecosystems.

The cruelty extends beyond the shooting itself. Pigeons are often captured from urban areas, transported under stressful conditions, and subjected to further distress before being used as targets. Such practices not only amount to animal cruelty but also represent wanton waste, especially when viable alternatives like clay targets exist for shooting sports enthusiasts.

The involvement of Troy Link, a prominent figure in the snack industry, has drawn attention to the issue. As the owner of Quail Creek Hunting Ranch and CEO of Jack Link’s Meat Snacks, Link’s association with live pigeon shooting has sparked calls for accountability. Organizations like SHARK and Animal Wellness Action have initiated a petition urging Link to discontinue future pigeon-shooting events, highlighting the broader implications of such practices on wildlife and environmental conservation.

“Target shooters have skeet and clay targets for recreational target shooting. To choose instead to slaughter live animals is just pathological. Only a sick mind shoots animals for target practice when fast-moving clay targets are far more challenging,” said Steve Hindi, president of SHARK.

The obvious outcry against live pigeon shooting underscores the need for stricter regulations and ethical considerations in recreational activities involving animals. As public awareness grows and advocacy efforts intensify, everyone needs to reassess their involvement in practices that inflict unnecessary harm on living beings and the environment.
