Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler has been celebrated for his commitment to animal welfare. He was recently honored alongside several other prominent figures at the Malibu Sunset Soirée For Animals on October 5. The event, hosted by the Center for a Humane Economy and the Global Council for Animals, recognized Butler’s “selfless dedication” to the cause, placing him among a select group of honorees, including director Alison Eastwood, philanthropist Laurie McGrath, and scientist/philanthropist Gary Michelson.
Butler, a longtime animal advocate, shared his excitement about receiving the award via social media on October 12. Posting a picture of his award, which titled him a “rock star for animals,” he expressed his surprise, writing, “I’m not sure what was more shocking; me getting an award for something that @gloriadeebutler kept as a surprise or that #talronnen actually left @crossroadskitchen to present it to me.”
Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center for a Humane Economy, praised the awardees, highlighting their significant impact: “The honorees exemplify the compassion and commitment needed to drive real change for animals… It is no exaggeration to say that millions of animals will be spared torment and cruelty because of their selfless dedication to the well-being of animals.”
Butler, now 75, has been a vegan for over sixty years. Reflecting on his decision, he shared a childhood memory that sparked his lifelong commitment to Animal rights: “I’ve always loved animals… And this one day I cut [the meat] up and then blood came out of it. I didn’t know what meat was. And I said to my mom, ‘There’s blood coming out of this thing that you’ve given me.’… And that was it. I was about eight years old at the time. And that was it. I’ve never eaten meat since.”
Butler’s advocacy extends beyond his dietary choices. In 2009, he partnered with Peta2, an organization that focuses on youth Animal rights activism, to promote a vegetarian lifestyle. In the campaign, Butler affirmed his commitment: “I’m Geezer Butler, and I’m a vegan.”
In a video interview with Peta2, Butler emphasized how accessible veganism has become, encouraging others to give plant-based alternatives a try. Beyond veganism, Butler and his wife, Gloria, have long been involved in efforts to stop puppy mills and address the overpopulation of dogs and cats.
