Senior Dog Breaks Hearts with Self-Soothing Behavior

Dog chewing on blanket

Snoopy is a special needs, senior dog who has been living at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington for over 650 days. That’s nearly two years this sweet boy has been waiting for a forever home. Recently, a volunteer named Julie Saraceno posted a video of Snoopy to TikTok showing his self-soothing behavior. To calm himself in the stressful shelter environment, Snoopy likes to suck on his blanket and toys.

Replying to @Cmg Snoopy is hoping today will be the day he goes home. 💜 Don’t worry, he does have his new bed and this is an older video. 💜 Snoopy has been a shelter dog for over 600 days. He has what is called cushings disease. He takes meds daily to treat this, along with being on a special diet. It gives him issues with his vision, hearing and weight. The shelter is open today between 11 to 4. Stop by to meet him! #shelterdogsrock #seniordogsrule #adoptme #themoreyouknow #tricitieswa

Shelters can be particularly stressful for senior dogs. This could contribute to Snoopy’s self-soothing behavior. Sadly, senior animals are also less likely to be adopted despite their many amazing qualities. Snoopy, who is considered a senior dog at around eight years old, also has Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s disease causes a dog’s adrenals to overproduce certain hormones. Due to his diagnosis, Snoopy struggles with his vision, weight, hearing, and skin issues. However, his medication and special diet help him tremendously. Despite his struggles, Snoopy still hopes to be adopted by a loving home where he can live out his golden years.
