Stories of children and their dogs sharing wonderful friendships are aplenty in books and movies – and in the real life as well. Eleven-year-old Lucas Fuller‘s beloved dog, Bear, came down with a deadly illness and was facing the worst outcome possible without a treatment. Luckily – he had his little hero right by his side.
Poor Bear contracted a fatal fungal infection, blastomycosis. He was coughing, sores started to appear on his body, and pus was forming in his eyes. The situation was dire – the only way to save the dog was a costly medical treatment which the boy’s mother, Karen, could not afford.
Lucas, however, was far from giving up hope and set out to help raise enough money to save Bear’s life. He created a “for hire” flyer and offered his services for anyone who needed help with mowing lawns, trimming, and washing cars. When the family’s neighbors saw the flyers, they shared the moving gesture on Facebook.
Soon, people began to Donate money for Bear’s treatment and Lucas’s mother set up a GoFundMe page to make it possible for anyone who wanted to help. In less than a month, the family not only met their goal of 2,000 dollars but far exceeded it! The story went viral and even got to a local news channel.
“We, Lucas, Bear, and myself, want to truly express our extreme gratitude for all of the love, Support, prayers, and donations that you have sent,” Karen Fuller wrote on the fundraiser page. “You have gone far above and beyond anything we could have ever hoped for and we are truly blessed by each and ever one of you.”
Thanks to his friend’s intervention and the help from many kind souls who donated money, Bear’s life was saved! He now still has four months of treatment ahead of him, but the lucky dog is finally looking better – and no doubt looking forward to full recovery.
