A quiet shift in Canadian grocery aisles is sending a loud message to American businesses. In response to renewed tariffs and political tensions, Canadian shoppers and retailers are turning away from US-made products—and it’s already hurting some US agricultural businesses.
According to Business Insider’s Katherine Li, Canadian grocery chains like Sobeys and Metro are actively promoting Canadian-made products with eye-catching labels and dedicated marketing. Some stores have already slashed their reliance on US imports, with Sobeys reporting a drop in US-sourced products from 12% to much lower levels as local alternatives take their place.
This movement isn’t just coming from the top. Canadian shoppers are embracing the boycott too. “Basically, overnight, everything changed,” said one Quebec resident, describing how shelves once stocked with American alcohol are now proudly local. Even ethically focused US brands like Burlap & Barrel are losing loyal Canadian customers despite their mission to Support smallholder farmers and fair sourcing. CEO Ethan Frisch said some long-time buyers are cutting ties purely based on country of origin.
Behind this consumer backlash lies a political firestorm. Former President Trump’s trade policies—including a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum—have left many Canadians angry. His rhetoric, including comments about making Canada “the 51st state,” has fueled national pride and calls for economic independence.
The consequences are real: the US agricultural sector could see reduced exports, lower prices, and declining incomes, especially for smaller farms that depend on steady cross-border demand. And with little chance of new subsidies, farmers may bear the brunt of the fallout.
It’s a reminder of how political choices ripple through global supply chains—and how consumer activism can reshape markets overnight.
