President Donald Trump is making a controversial move to ramp up logging on national forests and public lands, but experts say it’s not as simple as he hopes. According to the Associated Press, Trump has directed federal agencies to explore ways to bypass environmental protections, particularly the Endangered Species Act, to increase domestic lumber production. However, doing so would require invoking the rarely used Endangered Species Committee—nicknamed the “God Squad.”
The committee has the power to exempt projects from species protections, even if it means driving a species to extinction. Yet, legal scholars point out that the law doesn’t allow the committee to be used proactively to dismantle regulations. Instead, it can only be triggered under very specific circumstances, making it an unlikely tool for Trump’s broader agenda.
This push comes after Trump declared a national energy emergency in January, vowing to cut regulatory “obstacles” that slow down logging, mining, and energy projects. The Endangered Species Act has long been a target of industries that argue it hampers economic development. But conservationists see it as a crucial safeguard against habitat destruction and species loss, preventing unchecked exploitation of natural resources.
Despite Trump’s efforts, legal and procedural barriers remain firmly in place. Experts say any attempt to fast-track logging by bypassing protections will face fierce legal challenges from environmental groups and potentially stall in court for years.
Nature doesn’t need another political battle—it needs protection. Instead of weakening laws that safeguard wildlife and forests, we should be investing in sustainable forestry and Conservation efforts. If we want a future with thriving forests and biodiversity, the time to act is now—Support responsible land stewardship and push back against destructive policies.
