A recent viral video showcasing a lion cub cruising through the streets of Pattaya in a Bentley has sparked widespread concern and led to legal action. Thai authorities have charged Sawangjit Kosoognern with illegal possession of the lion cub, citing violations of environmental and natural resources laws.
The footage, which got over 2.6 million views online, prompted a swift investigation by law enforcement. The Central Investigation Bureau announced the charges against Sawangjit, highlighting her infringement of the Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act 2019.
According to reports, Sawangjit confessed to purchasing the lion cub from another individual, yet failed to obtain the necessary authorization documents. Despite her claims of ignorance regarding the cub’s sex and the absence of proper documentation, she now faces penalties including a fine of up to 100,000 baht (£2,200) and potential imprisonment for a year under Thai law.
Further complicating the situation, the lion cub was housed in a residence rented by a Sri Lankan individual, who was seen driving the Bentley in the viral video. Authorities have since deported the Sri Lankan man back to his home country.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this incident is a reminder of the challenges faced in curbing the illicit possession and trafficking of protected animals.
