Shelter Dog Learns to Trust Again in Video

When Lauren Cook, cofounder of The Healing Hero Project, visited a Texas kennel, one shelter dog stood out. Benny, a trembling and distrustful pup, immediately captured her heart. “He was so scared and so distrustful,” Cook shared in a video for The Dodo. “There was something about him that just grabbed my heart immediately.”

Cook decided to foster Benny, giving him the patience and care he needed. Slowly, Benny began to trust. The breakthrough moments—taking treats from her hand, enjoying ear rubs—showed his growing confidence. Soon, Benny, once withdrawn, became an affectionate, playful companion. “If I stopped [petting him], he would let me know that he was not done and he needed more affection,” Cook recalled.

After much progress, Benny was ready for adoption. Wearing a blue bandana, he met his forever family.
