Red dye number 3, a once-common food additive, has officially been banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This decision follows the Delaney Clause, which prohibits food additives that have been linked to cancer in humans or animals. But is this bright red ingredient really as dangerous as it seems? Let’s break down the facts.
The initial concerns about red dye number 3 date back to the 1980s, when a small study involving 70 rats linked the additive to thyroid tumors. These tumors appeared in 20% of the rats whose diets consisted of 4% red dye number 3—a proportion far greater than most humans would ever consume. For perspective, one would need to eat an unrealistic amount of candy daily, such as 100 cups of candy corn, for the dye to reach comparable levels in their diet.
Concerns have also emerged regarding the dye’s potential role in hyperactivity among children. In 2023, California banned red dye number 3 after reviewing studies that suggested a link. However, many of these studies focused on children already diagnosed with hyperactivity disorders, and the results were mixed. Teachers, who often spend the most time observing children in structured settings, reported no significant behavioral changes. Meanwhile, some parents observed minor shifts, but these findings were subjective and inconsistent.
While the ban reflects caution in regulating potentially harmful additives, it’s worth considering the practical risk. Unless someone is consuming red dye number 3 in extreme quantities, the likelihood of health issues like thyroid cancer remains incredibly low. The same can be said for its supposed impact on children’s behavior, which lacks conclusive scientific evidence.
