In a quirky twist of nature, penguins may be helping slow Climate change—thanks to their poop. According to a recent study published in Communications Earth & Environment and covered by ABC News, the ammonia-rich droppings of Adelie penguins in Antarctica are playing an unexpected role in cloud formation.
The research, led by Matthew Boyer from the University of Helsinki, reveals that penguin guano emits ammonia, which reacts with sulfur compounds released by ocean phytoplankton. This reaction creates aerosols—tiny particles that provide a surface for water vapor to condense on, leading to cloud formation. These clouds help trap cold air near the surface and reflect solar radiation, effectively reducing ice melt in Antarctica.
Scientists observed this phenomenon at Marambio Base, near a colony of 60,000 Adelie penguins. When the wind blew from the colony, ammonia levels were up to 1,000 times higher than background levels. Even after the penguins migrated, the poop left behind continued emitting ammonia for weeks, proving that even absent penguins can contribute to atmospheric changes.
This fluffy white fog—literally made possible by penguin poo—could be part of a larger natural feedback loop protecting the fragile Antarctic climate. As Boyer told ABC, the findings show “a deep connection between ecosystem processes… and atmospheric processes” that influence not just Antarctica, but global climate patterns.
In a time of rapidly melting ice and rising seas, even small players like penguins can have a surprisingly big impact. Protecting them and their habitats doesn’t just save wildlife—it might help save the planet too.
Let’s protect species like the Adelie penguin not just because they’re cute, but because they’re vital. From guano to glaciers, every piece of nature has a role. Choose plant-based, vote for climate policies, and Support biodiversity-focused Conservation.
