According to The Guardian, Paris is witnessing an unusual campaign strategy as mayoral candidates compete for the votes of the city’s dog owners. With more than 100,000 animals in the French capital, politicians are betting that pet policies could swing this tight election.
The race comes down to leftwing frontrunner Emmanuel Grégoire and conservative Rachida Dati, who each won their way into the second round. Both have rolled out promises tailored specifically to canine companions and their human voters. Grégoire even launched a dedicated Instagram account featuring dogs charming the “future mayor” into opening more dog runs across the city.
Right now, Paris only allows dogs in 165 of its 550 parks and open spaces, and just 43 enclosed areas let them run free. That’s prompted Paris Condition Canine, a group representing dog owners, to demand change. Their manifesto calls for reversing the current system where bans are the norm and permissions are rare exceptions.
The candidates are listening. Grégoire promises more outdoor spaces, subsidized vet visits, and dogs on all public transport. Dati wants “shared spaces” throughout the city and has hosted “doggy drinks” for constituents. Other candidates offered everything from dog friendly taxis to more runs along the Seine. These aren’t just gestures either. In the 2020 election, only 57,000 votes separated the winner from the runner up. This year looks even tighter.
Paris ranks among the world’s most densely dog populated cities, with roughly 2,857 canines per square kilometer. An Ifop poll showed 58 percent of voters consider animal welfare a priority. Still, some residents remain skeptical that dog policies alone will determine how they vote. One local pet owner noted that while Paris isn’t great for dogs, other issues matter more.
Whether these promises translate into actual change remains to be seen. But for now, our four legged friends are getting unusual attention in this election. If you care about animals and their wellbeing, Support leaders who prioritize compassion for all species in our urban spaces.
