Five Just Stop Oil activists have been sentenced to significant prison terms for orchestrating protests aimed at halting traffic on London’s M25 motorway. This move marks one of the harshest crackdowns on non-violent environmental protest in the UK. The activists—Roger Hallam, Daniel Shaw, Louise Lancaster, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, and Cressida Gethin—were found guilty of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance, receiving sentences ranging from four to five years.
The protests, which took place over four days in November 2022, involved activists climbing onto motorway gantries, causing major disruptions. Roger Hallam, a prominent figure in the climate movement, described their goal as creating “the biggest disruption in British modern history” to pressure the government into ending new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea.
Despite their intentions, Judge Christopher Hehir emphasized that the activists had moved beyond concerned campaigning into fanaticism, disregarding the rights of others in their methods. He stressed that while climate concerns are valid, the activists’ actions were not justified under the law.
The sentences handed down are unprecedented in the UK for non-violent protest, surpassing previous penalties for similar actions. The judge did not allow the defendants to present their climate motivations as a defense, leading to an outcry from supporters who argued the sentences undermined civic freedoms.
Michel Forst, the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders, condemned the decision, suggesting it signals a troubling shift in how peaceful protests are treated. Similarly, Greenpeace UK criticized the sentences, stating they reflect a growing trend of suppressive measures against activists.
This development occurs amid a backdrop of increasing restrictions on protests in the UK. Simultaneously, high court injunctions were granted to three airports, preventing protests on their premises, further illustrating the tightening grip on environmental activism. The activists’ harsh sentencing has sparked a broader debate about the balance between lawful protest and civil disruption, highlighting the ongoing struggle between environmental urgency and legal boundaries.
