Plastic water bottles contribute greatly to plastic pollution. Americans alone use 50 billion water bottles a year. Something has to be done about the amount of plastic bottles used and disposed of that end up in the ocean and kill marine animals, ultimately damaging very vital and necessary marine ecosystems. Jaden Smith’s JUST Water company was created as a solution to this problem. The water is packaged in cartons rather than plastic, preventing so much more plastic from reaching the oceans.
Jaden Smith, through his company, has done charitable work, even providing Flint, Michigan with clean water. And now the JUST Water company continues to tackle plastic Pollution. They’ve partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line to eliminate plastic water bottles on the ship!
The cruise line’s newest ship, the 4,000-passenger ship Norwegian Encore will set sail in November and there won’t be any plastic water bottles on board. Instead there will only be eco-friendly JUST Water bottles made of paper and sugar cane. They’re aiming to switch their entire fleet to the plastic-free water bottles by 2021.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive, Andy Stuart says, “We’ve established a goal to eliminate single-use plastics across the fleet, which is a substantial undertaking. The Just Water container goes as far as technology allows today in eliminating anything not renewable or recyclable in a container that will store water.”
Cruise ships are responsible for other environmental problems, but such a large and popular cruise line trying to make more sustainable and environmentally friendly decisions is still progress. It gives us hope for the future!
