The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) just took a massive hit—about 800 employees were abruptly fired, and more layoffs could be coming. According to CNN, the move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to shrink government agencies, including those focused on climate science and disaster forecasting. The cuts impact nearly every division of NOAA, which plays a crucial role in tracking extreme weather, monitoring climate change, and protecting marine life.
The National Weather Service (NWS) was particularly affected, with between 350 and 375 probationary employees—those with less than a year of service—losing their jobs. Even some top researchers in hurricane modeling, tsunami warnings, and artificial intelligence-driven climate forecasting were terminated.
The layoffs come at a time when the world is facing record-breaking temperatures, devastating storms, and worsening climate disasters. NOAA’s mission is to “protect lives and property,” but these cuts will leave the U.S. even more vulnerable to extreme weather. Project 2025, the conservative plan driving these terminations, aims to slash NOAA funding while countries like China are investing heavily in climate research.
If we want a future where hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires don’t catch us off guard, we need to stand up for climate science. Support independent climate research, Donate to environmental organizations, and demand action from leaders before it’s too late.
