With 300 million tons of plastic produced every year and around 8.8 million tons ending up in the oceans, there is no such thing as having too many ways to turn this non-biodegradable waste into something new and useful. A brilliant way to do so has been found by a company Conceptos Plasticos, founded by Oscar Mendez in Colombia. The company collects recyclable plastic, melts it down, and molds it into bricks that are then used to build houses for the local community. So, long story short, the harmful plastic waste is literally transformed into homes!
This ingenious initiative answers two problems at once: the overflow of plastic in the area and the housing shortages experienced by the locals. According to Al Jazeera, it is estimated that 650 tons of plastic are thrown away every single day in Bogota, Colombia’s capital. The idea to turn something we desperately have to get rid of, as well as protect our waters and land, into such a useful product is nothing short of revolutionary. “If we use just two percent of the waste plastic in the world we can change the lives of millions of people,” Mendez told Al Jazeera. “We can end the housing shortage in Latin America in just 10 years.”
The company has already helped to give houses to 42 families displaced by conflict in the town of Guapi, Colombia. In the process of building the houses, they have recycled 120 tons of plastic!
