Climate progress can feel invisible when bad headlines pile up. Still, the numbers are shifting in ways that matter.
According to David Fickling at Bloomberg Opinion, big chunks of Europe and the UK are edging toward a mostly clean electricity system, with roughly three quarters of power coming from non fossil sources. That is not a finish line, but it is a serious milestone. It also means the next stretch will feel slower, because the last miles need more storage, smarter grids, and flexible demand.
Cement is another quiet storyline. Making cement drives a meaningful slice of global emissions, and China’s construction slowdown is dragging output down to levels not seen since 2009. If global cement demand really has peaked, that gives the world breathing room while cleaner building materials scale up.
Then there are electric vehicles, which keep spreading even when the narrative says they are stalling. China now buys plug in cars at massive scale, and Europe is not far behind. More interesting is what is happening outside the usual spotlight. Countries like Turkey, Thailand, and Vietnam have recently crossed the 20% mark for EV sales share. BloombergNEF estimates that 27.3% of all passenger vehicles sold worldwide in the September quarter came with a plug.
These shifts are not just about charts. Cleaner power and fewer tailpipes can mean less soot in lungs, better public health, and safer habitat for wildlife near busy roads and ports. A steadier grid also helps communities handle heat waves without leaning as hard on coal and gas.
And we can push the curve too. Pair clean energy with less waste, better transit, and plant based meals, and you cut pressure on the environment from multiple angles. If you want a simple way to show up for the planet, try one more vegan meal this week and Support policies that speed the transition.
