Following the Netherlands’ 2012 decision to phase out the use of wild animals in circuses, Dutch circus company Circus Freiwald is one of the last remaining entities to use them. In this two-minute video, gentle elephant Buba clearly decided she had had enough of performing tricks and wanted to go off on a shopping trip instead!

The incident happened at a Dutch car boot sale, where Buba calmly strolled up and down through the merchandise stalls, casting her eye over all of the items on sale. Video uploader Wouter Louwerens said, “It was beautiful to see how she as well as the public stayed quite calm. After a few minutes her handler arrived and took her home as if he was walking a dog.”

There is some uncertainty over Buba’s fate. With the ban on circus animals to be implemented nationwide in September, Louwerens fears that 40-year-old Buba will not be able to find a home in Europe and “might have to go to the U.S. or Africa.” Let’s hope she gets to live out the rest of her days in a peaceful sanctuary!
