Tensions are rising between two of the world’s biggest emitters after China pushed back against European criticism of its new climate targets. According to Reuters, the EU’s Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra called Beijing’s pledge to cut emissions by just 7–10% by 2035 “clearly disappointing,” arguing it falls far short of what science demands.
China’s foreign ministry quickly fired back, labeling the remarks hypocritical and accusing the bloc of “double standards.” Officials pointed out that the EU itself has yet to finalize its new climate plan, despite an earlier deadline, while its own reductions remain incomplete. They argued that Beijing is showing “the most resolute will” to deliver on its promises, even as critics warn its goals are nowhere near the cuts needed to align with the Paris Agreement.
The standoff comes against a backdrop of rising global climate frustration. China’s pledge represents its first official commitment to reduce overall emissions, but scientists say a 30% cut by 2035 is what’s required to stay within the 1.5°C warming threshold. Meanwhile, the EU has discussed a 66–72% reduction by 2035 from 1990 levels, but delays in publishing its official plan have left room for criticism.
The debate is unfolding as extreme weather events and rising temperatures continue to remind the world that time is running out. Both China and the EU carry immense responsibility: together, they account for more than a third of global greenhouse gas Pollution. While the U.S. has also stumbled on its commitments—most recently under Trump, who dismissed Climate change as “the greatest con job”—progress depends on cooperation rather than blame.
What’s clear is that piecemeal targets and political sparring won’t be enough to protect the environment or safeguard global health. Real solutions demand urgent, science-based ambition, and the shift toward clean energy and plant-based systems can help accelerate change. The world needs collaboration, not finger-pointing, to ensure a livable future for all animals and people on this planet.
