A new app called Birdex wants to make birdwatching feel a bit more like a quest. Users log sightings, earn points, and collect digital cards for UK bird species. Rarer birds score more, so people can compete with friends and build a running tally.

According to Chris Baraniuk at The Guardian, the app has already logged more than 200,000 sightings. That is a big number for any hobby, and it hints at something larger than bragging rights. If Birdex shares its data with researchers, it could Support citizen science work that tracks wildlife trends over time.

Still, gamifying nature comes with tradeoffs. Some birders worry that chasing points could push people toward sensitive species, especially during nesting season. In Scotland, for example, it is illegal to disturb capercaillies while they nest, and local officials already warn visitors not to go looking for them. A simple in app warning could help, and so could clear guidance on distance, timing, and ethical behavior around animals.

Birdex has also drawn criticism for using AI generated bird art. The developers say they used AI because they had limited funds, but they plan to hire artists later. That matters because trust and care sit at the center of any tool meant to Support the environment.

Tech can nudge people outside, and that can boost mood and health. However, the goal should stay simple: notice more, learn more, and leave no harm behind. If you try Birdex or any nature app, move gently, respect boundaries, and keep your choices kind to the planet, including eating more plant based meals.
