Elon Musk’s new venture, xAI, has come under scrutiny for reportedly worsening air quality in Memphis, Tennessee. The company’s unauthorized use of natural gas turbines at its data center is believed to be contributing to the region’s smog issues. Environmental advocates have expressed concerns, pointing out that these activities have proceeded without the necessary permits.

xAI, an artificial intelligence startup, opted to use these gas turbines at a former Electrolux factory site, aiming to Support its ambitious AI modeling efforts, which involve extensive data processing and power consumption. The Southern Environmental Law Center, advocating on behalf of local groups, has formally requested that the Shelby County Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency investigate the situation.
The data center, which began operations in June, utilizes 18 gas combustion turbines to meet its substantial electricity needs, with plans to eventually transition to local utility sources. Despite Memphis Light, Gas, and Water beginning to supply 50 megawatts of power to the site in August, xAI’s total demand exceeds this, requiring an additional 100 megawatts. The utility has been enhancing local infrastructure to accommodate this massive energy consumption.
This setup has raised environmental and health alarms, particularly because the turbines have been installed without the permits usually required for such equipment in Tennessee. These permits are crucial as they dictate emission standards and operational efficiency, helping to mitigate Pollution levels. According to the environmental groups’ letter, the turbines could emit around 130 tons of nitrogen oxides each year, potentially making xAI one of the top sources of such pollutants in the county.
Nitrogen oxides, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can severely affect respiratory health, causing symptoms like coughing, breathlessness, and even significant tissue damage at higher concentrations. Shelby County, where Memphis is located, has consistently received poor ratings from the American Lung Association for its air quality, primarily due to smog.
The controversy surrounding xAI’s operations in Memphis is part of a broader pattern observed with Musk-led initiatives, often involving the use of high-emissions equipment without the necessary environmental safeguards. This approach has previously led to regulatory pushbacks against other Musk enterprises, such as SpaceX and The Boring Company, for similar environmental compliance issues.
Environmental attorneys and local advocates are pushing for greater transparency and public engagement in projects like xAI’s, emphasizing the need to address the immediate health and environmental impacts on the community effectively.
