Key findings highlight the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act, enacted in 2022, which in its first year contributed to the creation of nearly 150,000 clean energy roles. This surge brings the total number of U.S. clean energy workers to around 3.5 million, surpassing the number of nurses nationwide. Notably, about one million of these jobs are in the traditionally Republican-dominated southern U.S., underscoring the widespread economic benefits of green policies.

The clean energy sector witnessed a 4.5% job growth rate last year, almost double the national average, with energy efficiency positions leading this expansion. The roles also span renewable energy sectors like wind and solar, as well as burgeoning industries such as electric vehicle production and electric grid enhancements.

However, the future of the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides essential tax credits and grants for clean energy initiatives, is contentious in the current presidential election debates. Former President Donald Trump has proposed canceling these green initiatives, which he terms as detrimental to traditional energy sectors.

Conversely, current Vice President Kamala Harris advocates for expanding upon these policies, aiming to further the U.S.’s competitiveness in the global clean energy market and addressing Climate change more aggressively.

The Biden administration’s regulations under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have also been pivotal. An analysis by the Environmental Protection Network indicates that EPA policies initiated since 2021 will not only save 200,000 lives by 2050 but also drastically reduce asthma-related incidents, enhancing public health across the nation.

These developments reflect a broader, potentially transformative economic shift spurred by the Biden administration’s environmental policies, even as political debates continue to shape the landscape of U.S. energy and environmental governance.
