Farm animals suffer so much pain and trauma. Between losing their mothers and babies; being stuck in cramped, unsanitary conditions; and eventually getting slaughtered, these poor animals have extremely hard lives. We’re always grateful to hear stories of animals who get to live out at least some portion of their lives in a sanctuary where people love and care for them.
In Brazil, one bull who was going to get slaughtered for meat ended up escaping his fate. He broke through a wall and kept running until he was finally allowed to be taken in by Santuario Vale da Rainha. When he arrived, his face was stained from tears. The poor bull had gone through so much and would not stop crying. However, once he looked into one woman’s eyes, his tears stopped.

Patricia Andrade Varela Favano, a yoga teacher and co-founder of the sanctuary, knew that despite people’s warning about the bull’s aggression, he would not hurt her. She had a special connection with the bull, whom they named Hanuman. She visited him in the fields to talk and sing to him, which became one of his favorite activities. Now whenever she is near, he shows his belly to ask for attention and lays down in her lap.
Santuario Vale da Rainha was started after Patricia and her husband, Vitor, decided to reconnect with nature by buying a small farm in the countryside. The original plan was to have a small organic farm and teach yoga, but then Patricia’s friend asked Patricia to take a horse that she could no longer care for. The couple realized that they could offer this kind of care and help to so many different animals. Thus, they started taking in animals that needed a safe and loving home. Now they teach people about animals like Hanuman. At the sanctuary, people get to listen to animals and understand them better, so that they can be more compassionate beings.
This story is amazing and it’s clear that Patricia and Hanuman have a really special bond. The love they share is awe-inspiring. If you’d like to Donate to their sanctuary, click here. Make sure to check out their website too.
