Police Officer Adopts Dog Found in Stolen Car

Dog sitting in back of car. A dog who was found in the back of a stolen car was adopted by a Colorado police officer.

When officers from the Boulder Police Department found a stolen car, they were unprepared for the occupant in the back seat. After arresting the people suspected of stealing the car, the Colorado police officers saw someone looking at them through the car’s window. It was a dog who had been left behind peering through the window. Hoping to help, the officers approached the car to see if she was willing to be coaxed out of the vehicle.

In body cam footage, one of the officers can be heard asking the dog “Are you friendly?” Gently, the officer hooks a leash to the white dog and then opens the door to let her out. She willingly jumps from the car. Despite the situation, the dog seems calm and well-behaved.

Officer Nate Taylor was impressed with how friendly the dog was. She even played with him while he was loading her into the car. Although the officer was required to surrender the dog to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley in case someone stepped forward to claim her, the Colorado cop already felt attached to the dog. So he left his contact information with the Humane Society in case no one stepped forward to claim the pup. After a week, during which time no one claimed her, the Humane Society called Taylor and let him know that the dog was available for adoption. After going through the adoption screening process, Taylor was able to bring the dog to her new home!

Now, the white dog found in the backseat of a stolen car has a new home and a new name. Called Miss. Bonnie, the pup now lives with Officer Taylor, his husband, and their two dachshunds. Although they don’t know much about Bonnie’s past, they say that she loves cuddling, playing, and treats.
