In light of recent events, where 16-time champion Joey Chestnut was ejected from Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest for promoting a vegan option, PETA is set to make a bold statement at this year’s event. Their life-size, hyperrealistic pig transport truck, known as “Hell on Wheels,” will be stationed outside Nathan’s Famous in Coney Island on Thursday, July 4, at 11 a.m.
The “Hell on Wheels” truck, covered in images of pigs crammed into crates en route to slaughter, will bombard spectators with actual recordings of animals’ panicked screams. Every 10 seconds, a subliminal message will urge viewers to consider a vegan lifestyle.

PETA’s Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman highlights the cruelty behind the meat industry, stating, “Behind every hot dog is a once-living, sensitive individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to their death.” Reiman urges people to recognize the suffering of animals in the meat industry and consider vegan alternatives.
In the meat industry, piglets endure painful procedures like tail docking, teeth clipping, and castration without pain relief. During transport to slaughterhouses, pigs are crammed into trucks, facing harsh weather conditions without food, water, or rest. Each year, over 1 million pigs die, and at least 40,000 sustain injuries during transport.
PETA emphasizes its stance that “animals are not ours to eat,” offering free Empathy Kits and vegan starter kits to promote kindness and Support those transitioning to a vegan lifestyle.
