Hibernation time is finally over, and this mother/cub duo of endangered Mexican black bears is out on a rock-climbing adventure on the wall of Santa Elena Canyon in Texas’ Big Bend National Park.
The mama bear is confident and sure of herself, but the baby bear struggles to make it up. This whole thing reminds me of that old Sesame Street clip with the tree frog trying to climb a branch to the tune of Joe Raposo’s “It’s a Long, Hard Climb.” Of course, the conclusion is the same.
Isn’t it fun watching these bears enjoy life in their natural habitat? It’s much more entertaining to watch them this way than performing silly tricks in a circus show. Plus, it’s a sweet reminder of the intense bond that mother bears with their cubs. I’d say the mom is showing her baby the ropes, but this fearless pair can climb the canyon wall just fine with no rope necessary.
