Conservationist Damian Aspinall raised a young gorilla named Kwibi at Howlett’s Wild Animal Park in Kent, England, treating him like his own son. In 2003, when Kwibi was five, Damian decided it was time to release him into a natural forest habitat in Gabon, Africa. Five years later, Damian traveled down a river making gorilla calls in search of his old friend.
Watch the video to see how Kwibi recognizes and responds to his surrogate father’s voice, still distinguishing it from others after five years in the wild. This gorilla’s interactions aren’t so different from those of a human reuniting with a loved one. Kwibi embraces Damian, introduces his new gorilla family and feels sad when it’s time to say goodbye.
Kwami isn’t the only animal to benefit from Damian’s goodwill. The conservationist founded the Aspinall Foundation, a charity dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating several endangered species, including the Javan gibbon, black rhino, greater bamboo lemur, and, of course, gorillas.
