In a surprising display of bipartisan agreement, a significant majority of former Trump supporters endorse President Biden’s federal clean energy incentives. According to a recent poll by Global Strategy Group (GSG), North Star, and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), 78% of 2020 Trump voters are in favor of these policies, highlighting a strong cross-party consensus on the issue.

The data, gathered from a survey of 1,000 registered U.S. voters conducted between August 1 and August 8, 2024, reveals broad Support for the clean energy tax credits offered under the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Only 10% of Trump voters from 2020 strongly oppose the IRA, indicating minimal resistance within the Republican base against these energy initiatives.
SEIA President and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper emphasized the economic benefits, stating, “Every American wants lower electricity prices and greater energy security – and that’s precisely what federal clean energy policies are delivering.” The incentives are not only promoting reduced energy costs but are also boosting national energy security, a critical issue as electoral debates heat up.
The poll also shows robust voter belief in the economic advantages of solar power and energy storage. Approximately 75% of respondents agree that solar energy benefits the U.S. economy, and similar majorities recognize the reliability enhancements that solar and storage combinations provide to the power grid. Furthermore, 74% of those surveyed believe that increased solar usage will lead to significant savings for American families.
The enthusiasm for clean energy is mirrored in the growing interest in residential solar solutions. Over 750,000 households claimed rooftop solar tax credits in 2023 alone, with states like Nevada and Arizona—key election battlegrounds—witnessing some of the highest adoption rates. This trend is bolstered by additional credits for energy-efficient home improvements, including heat pumps and home insulation, with millions of households benefiting nationwide.
As the political climate evolves, the widespread Support for these clean energy policies among voters from all political backgrounds suggests that maintaining or expanding these incentives could be a wise move for any forward-thinking lawmaker.
