Most news related to African elephants is disheartening given the threats they face. These animals are highly endangered by the illegal ivory trade, with an estimated 100 of them being killed for their tusks every day. During the 1970s and 1980s, the numbers of African elephants declined from 1.3 million to 600,000 … and today, many wildlife Conservation experts fear that they could soon be extinct.
However, the many wonderful individuals and groups out there who are fighting on behalf of these beautiful endangered creatures give us hope that they can indeed be saved. One such organization, The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), is renowned for their incredible anti-poaching work. They also run a dedicated elephant orphanage, where motherless, injured or ill baby elephants are cared for and rehabilitated before being released back into the wild. The sweet video above shows what happened when one of their former orphans, Wendi, returned to visit her old friends and carers – accompanied by her own first-born baby, Wiva!
DSWT said, “It is testament to Wendi’s love and trust in her former human carers that she allows us so close to her first wild-born baby, Wiva. While it is heartwarming for us to witness mother and calf thriving, this is a situation that would never have existed were it not for the DSWT, and those who Support our efforts, enabling us to rescue and hand raise Wendi all those years ago. Scenes like these evoke true feelings of goodness and hope for the future.”
