The Drax Group, a UK-based energy giant, has come under fire for its operations across the United States, where its wood pellet mills have been linked to significant air Pollution and health concerns in small towns. Despite its role in advancing renewable energy by replacing coal-fired electricity in the UK with wood pellets, the company’s operations in the US tell a different story, one of environmental violations and community impact.

In Gloster, Mississippi, residents like Sheila Mae Dobbins have experienced deteriorating health conditions, including heart disease and COPD, since a Drax wood pellet mill began operations near their homes. The facility, which opened in 2014, was initially welcomed for its potential economic benefits. However, it has employed only a few locals, and its primary function has been to produce pellets for burning in foreign power stations, including Drax’s own in the UK.
The mill has repeatedly breached legal limits for harmful air pollutants, resulting in fines and promises of improved Pollution controls which residents say have not materialized. In 2020, the Mississippi mill faced a $2.5 million penalty for exceeding emission limits. Continued violations have led to further fines and community outcry over air quality that they describe as unbearable and unhealthy.
Gloster is just one example of the broader impact Drax’s 17 pellet mills in the US and Canada have had on local environments and communities. In Louisiana, Drax’s mills have faced millions in fines for similar violations, and the company is currently involved in dispute resolution over additional emissions breaches.
Scientific studies and resident testimonials consistently point to an increase in Pollution and health issues corresponding with the proximity to these mills. A Brown University research team found that Gloster’s air contains higher levels of toxic chemicals compared to towns without pellet mills, particularly at night when emissions spike dramatically.
The environmental and health crises unfolding near Drax’s facilities have sparked significant local and scientific concern. Community groups like Greater Greener Gloster are actively campaigning for cleaner air and stricter regulations on the mill’s operations. Despite these efforts, residents feel their health and environment continue to be sacrificed for the company’s profits, which are bolstered by substantial UK government subsidies aimed at supporting renewable energy production.
Drax maintains that its operations do not adversely affect human health, citing independent analyses. However, the details of these studies and the identity of the consultants have not been disclosed, adding to community frustration and mistrust.
As Drax plans to expand its operations in the US, including new projects in Washington state and California, communities are increasingly wary of the promised economic and environmental benefits. The debate continues over the real costs of renewable energy production, especially when it comes at the expense of public health and local environments.
