More bad news about plastic. A new study by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) found humans eat 5 grams of plastic each week, on average. Or, the amount equal to the credit card in your wallet. Because of plastics found in food and water supplies, each human eats approximately 2000 pieces of plastic a week.

Extensive research has found just how much plastic is in food and therefore in our bodies. The WWF commissioned the study by the University of Newcastle, Australia. The world has produced as much plastic since 2000, as it did all the previous years combined. 30% of this plastic is leaked into nature. And that’s how it ends up in our bodies.

The university conducted 52 studies to find the calculation of 5 grams, 33 looked at food and beverage consumption and plastic. Foods and drinks like water, salt, beer and shellfish were found to have microplastics. According to the study, water had the highest amount of microplastics. And microplastics were found in both tap and bottled water.

Long term affects of plastic on our bodies is not yet understood. The WHO is conducting a review of microplastics. Their research also found microplastics in the water supply.

Speaking about the WWF findings, Marco Lambertini WWF International Director General shared, “These findings must serve as a wake-up call to governments.  Not only are plastics polluting our oceans and waterways and killing marine life – it’s in all of us and we can’t escape consuming plastics. Global action is urgent and essential to tackling this crisis. While research is investigating potential negative effects of plastic on human health, we are all clear that this is a worldwide problem that can only be solved by addressing the root cause of plastic Pollution.”
