A coalition of over 700 public health professionals, scientists, and activists has voiced strong opposition to the Senate confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the nation’s next health secretary. The group, calling themselves “ Defend Public Health ,” has expressed serious concerns regarding Kennedy’s qualifications and controversial viewpoints, which they believe could weaken the country’s ability to manage severe infectious diseases.

Leading figures from renowned institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and Emory have signed an open letter denouncing Kennedy’s nomination. The letter underscores that his unconventional views and lack of experience running a complex agency like the Department of Health and Human Services poses a serious threat to public health . Critics argue that Kennedy’s longstanding skepticism about vaccines, despite his claims of merely advocating for greater transparency, undermines decades of progress in fighting deadly illnesses such as COVID-19 , measles, polio, and seasonal flu.

Public health insiders worry that appointing someone with what they describe as “fringe” beliefs could expose the nation to renewed vulnerability against infectious diseases. The signatories emphasized that Kennedy’s limited experience in healthcare management could jeopardize the effectiveness of the federal response to public health crises. They pointed out that managing extensive bureaucratic systems requires not only robust expertise but also a commitment to evidence-based practices—qualities they fear Kennedy does not possess.

This opposition comes on the heels of another letter from more than 15,000 doctors, coordinated by a group aligned with the Democratic Committee to Protect Health Care , which similarly urged senators to reject Kennedy’s confirmation. While discussions continue on Capitol Hill, the emerging consensus among public health professionals is clear: the risks associated with confirming Kennedy are too significant to overlook.
