The ultimate goal of elephant rescue organizations like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is to reintroduce the elephants back into their native habitat. It takes years of training and interaction with other elephants for calves to be ready for total reintroduction. In this video, we see three babies graduate to the next exciting step in their rehabilitation process!
Elephants Rorogoi, Arruba, and Masharaki were all set to go when a sudden downpour of rain stopped the DSWT transport trucks in their tracks. When the rain finally stopped, DSWT staff knew that they had to get the elephants on board ASAP! Rorogoi got on without an issue, but the other two elephants were considerably more wary. Still, all it took was some fresh milk and a nudge in the right direction to get them all boarded up.
Thankfully the trip went on without any problems – they did need to make a pit stop when Masharaki loudly demanded some greens to chew on though! Upon arrival at the DSWT Voi Rehabilitation Unit in Tsavo East National Park, the baby elephants were welcomed into their new herd without a hitch! Seeing these powerful and majestic creatures interact like this is truly awe-inspiring.
