Losing a pet is one of the hardest things a person can go through. For anyone who has ever loved an animal, that bond is real, deep, and worth honoring at every stage of life, including the last one.

According to WTOP reporter Anne Kramer, who wrote about her own experience losing her seven-year-old black lab Raven to oral cancer, the decision to say goodbye is rarely clear-cut. Raven showed no obvious symptoms. She still walked miles each day, played with her toys, and napped peacefully. Yet the cancer was aggressive, and time was short.

Dr. Gina Akande, a veterinarian at Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Rockville, Maryland, offered guidance that stuck with Kramer long after: “It’s better a day too soon than a day too late.” That perspective, focusing on the pet’s comfort rather than our own grief, is something worth sitting with.

Families today have more options than ever. Some choose a traditional vet office, where practices are increasingly designing calmer, warmer spaces away from the usual clinical bustle. Others are turning to services like Lap of Love, a home hospice and in-home euthanasia company where a vet visits without a white coat, allowing animals to pass surrounded by familiar scents, toys, and the people they love most.

For many, the home option brings real peace. One pet owner described the experience simply as “peaceful,” and that word matters. Our companions give us so much throughout their lives. They deserve a goodbye that reflects that love.

Grief after losing a pet is valid and real. Give yourself grace, lean on your community, and remember the joy they brought to your corner of this planet.
