‘Big Bang Theory’ Star Kunal Nayyar Calls on the US to End Cosmetics Animal Testing

These days it seems like nearly every “Big Bang Theory” star is advocating for animals – and we’re loving it!

Outraged by the Canadian seal hunt, whose 2014 season began in April with a ridiculous quota, the show’s leading actress Kaley Cuoco took to Twitter to express her disdain for the annual slaughter that kills hundreds of thousands of young seals each year for a dying market.

Not long before, plant-powered actress Mayim Bialik, who plays Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on the sitcom, joined Cruelty Free International in urging the U.S. to end cosmetics animal testing and adopt humane testing alternatives.

Now, actor Kunal Nayyar, known as the adorablly awkward scientist Raj Koothrappali, has also joined Cruelty Free International’s campaign with Bialik. He is calling on the U.S. to take the same path as India and European Union nations by banning cosmetics animal testing for good.

“I am delighted to join the Cruelty Free International campaign to end the use of animals for cosmetics tests around the world. I am proud that in England, where I was born, and in India, where I grew up and have lived for many years, animal testing for cosmetics has already been banned.  The U.S now has the opportunity to follow suit and I urge everyone to get behind the Humane Cosmetics Act,” said Nayyar.

The Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 4148) was introduced in early March by Representative Jim Moran (D-Va.). If passed, the act will make it illegal for anyone “to conduct or commission cosmetic animal testing in the U.S.” and will “prohibit selling, offering for sale or transporting any cosmetics in interstate commerce if the final product or any component was developed or manufactured using animal testing,” the Humane Society of the United States reports.

So far, the act has 30 co-sponsors in Congress and has recently been supported by the California Senate through the state’s own resolution that calls for an end to cosmetics animal testing (which has won amazing bipartisan support!)

As Cruelty Free International North American Campaign Manager, Monica Engebreston stated, “Now more than ever, it is time for US voters to make their voices heard.”

So…let’s take action!

Give lab animals a voice and contact your federal representative and senators today and ask that they Support and become co-sponsors of the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 4148). After you call and email your elected officials be sure to follow up by signing this petition (if you haven’t done so already!).
