In a significant environmental development, the U.S. Department of Justice, alongside several environmental groups, has initiated legal proceedings against Campbell Soup Company. The allegations state that the food manufacturing giant has been contributing to pollution in Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, through its operations in Napoleon, Ohio.

Filed within hours of each other in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the lawsuits claim that Campbell’s facility has been discharging wastewater and pollutants into the Maumee River, which subsequently flows into Lake Erie. These pollutants include harmful bacteria, E. coli, and phosphorus, contributing to the lake’s environmental issues.
Campbell Soup has responded to these allegations by highlighting steps already taken to enhance wastewater management and committing to further improvements and compliance with environmental regulations. The company emphasized its plans for capital investments aimed at permanently resolving the issue.
The crux of the environmental concern centers on the detrimental impact of the pollutants on Lake Erie’s ecosystem. Not only do these pollutants affect plants and wildlife, but they also degrade water quality and pose potential health risks to humans. The discharge of pollutants is linked to the exacerbation of toxic algal blooms in Lake Erie, a recurring environmental problem that impacts the lake annually.
The legal action seeks injunctive relief and civil penalties against Campbell Soup for breaching the Clean Water Act. This lawsuit comes in the wake of a Supreme Court decision that limited the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority over certain waterways, marking a pivotal moment in environmental regulatory enforcement.
Environmental advocates, including Environment America and Lake Erie Waterkeeper, have previously warned Campbell Soup of their intentions to sue, citing the company’s ongoing exceedance of legal limits on pollutant discharges. The concerted effort by these organizations underscores the broader struggle to protect Lake Erie from further ecological damage and to uphold environmental standards and regulations.
