It’s a heartbreaking reality: When caring for a dog becomes too much for some people, their initial instinct is to abandon them. While the conventional wisdom might be that dogs are animals, and thus do well in the wild, the truth is that dogs who are left to fend for themselves become malnourished, and every day turns into a painful struggle to survive.
This was the case for one unfortunate dog named Champ. He was found by a couple on a hiking trail in chains. The poor animal skeletal and near death, the pair didn’t even know if Champ was alive at first. Thankfully, after a very scary blood transfusion, Champ was nursed back to health by a local animal hospital. The vets there said Champ wouldn’t have survived another 12 hours if he hadn’t been found.
Champ’s owners were found by the Laurens County Sheriff’s office and charged with animal cruelty. While Champ has certainly suffered at the hands of humans, according the veterinary staff, he ‘doesn’t hold any grudges’ and has a ‘warm and sunny personality.’
There’s a lot to learn from Champ’s reliance and forgiveness. Still, champ was one of the lucky ones. If you or someone you know is unable to care for a dog, the best thing you can do is give them up to a charitable organization or your local animal shelter. It might not be easy, but it will ensure a brighter future for an innocent animal.
