Exciting research suggests that dogs may be the most accurate way to detect COVID-19, even better than PCR testing. In a study, researchers found that trained canines detected COVID-19 in 97% of symptomatic cases and nearly 100% of asymptomatic cases. Hindu medicine has shown us that some diseases can alter a human’s scent, says D’Aniello, et al. While humans may not be able to detect these subtle odor changes, dogs are capable. These dogs are trained to smell different molecules from the human body and can give specific signals when identifying an olfactory signature, D’Aniello, et al adds. Reward-driven training methods could ethically produce thousands of COVID-sniffers.

While these COVID-sniffing dogs are very promising, more research is still needed. Medical scent/COVID detection is more complicated than drug or bomb detection. There is a concern that these dogs may mistake the common flu or cold for COVID. Government approval and investment will allow the training and resources necessary to make this promising research a reality. When we already have a non-animal based means to test for COVID, it so moronic to pursue the “may be more accurate” method of testing involving dogs. Dogs are known to frequently fail in false detection of drugs, etc. Their ‘detection” is also interpreted by a more inaccurate human handler. The “rthical training” will be a joke, the same joke that is being perpetrated by companies like Envigo that was exposed in the cruel breeding and rearing of over 4000 dogs. Once again, only morons would even consider such options and print them in a publications like this.
