Every year, millions of farm animals endure unimaginable suffering at livestock auctions in the United States, often hidden from public scrutiny and accountability.

These auctions are central to the meat industry, where cows, goats, sheep, and other animals are subjected to horrific treatment as they are bought and sold. A thorough 1.5-year undercover investigation by Strategies for Ethical and Environmental Development (SEED) revealed alarming daily abuses at 17 auctions and markets across 10 states.

These marketplaces treat animals as mere commodities, ignoring their capacity to feel pain and fear. SEED investigators documented shocking acts of abuse, including handlers beating, kicking, and dragging animals, neglecting serious injuries, and displaying outright sadistic cruelty.

In one incident, a cow that couldn’t stand was dragged by a forklift with a chain around her neck while the operator laughed at her suffering. In another case, a worker deliberately trapped and crushed a goat’s head between a wall and a gate, leaving the poor animal screaming in agony. Calves too young to walk were shocked with electric prods and violently thrown into trucks, with many collapsing from exhaustion or dying during transport due to overcrowding and neglect.

These horrific acts continue because there are no federal laws protecting farm animals at auctions, leaving their welfare unregulated. Even where state laws exist, they are often weak and poorly enforced. This creates an environment where cruelty can thrive without consequence.

Animals are not commodities; they are living beings deserving of our protection. The abuse documented at livestock auctions highlights a serious failure of our moral responsibility.
