Measure J Rejected in Sonoma County as Voters Dismiss Factory Farm Ban

Sonoma County California

Sonoma County’s Measure J, a contentious proposal to restrict large animal farms, appears headed for defeat, with early vote counts showing an overwhelming 85% of voters opposing the measure. If passed, Measure J would have reshaped the county’s agricultural landscape, leading to phased closures or cutbacks at approximately 21 farms, many of which are long-standing family operations.

Measure J faced significant resistance, not only from local citizens but also from city councils across the county and both major political parties. Opponents argued that the measure would threaten traditional farming and local economies. In response, the Coalition to End Factory Farming, a group of animal rights organizations advocating for the measure, stated that Measure J aimed to curb the expansion of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in Sonoma.

Leading the initiative, the coalition includes Direct Action Everywhere, an activist organization known for covert farm inspections and animal rescues. Direct Action Everywhere’s high-profile activism has led to legal action. Zoe Rosenberg, a 22-year-old activist, is scheduled for trial in May on charges related to removing chickens from a local slaughterhouse. Meanwhile, co-founder Wayne Hsiung faces felony trespassing charges after multiple farm visits in 2018 and 2019.

In the wake of Measure J’s likely failure, the Coalition to End Factory Farming voiced frustration with the “No on J” campaign, attributing its defeat to substantial opposition funding, primarily from Perdue and other large corporations. “The ‘No on J’ campaign outspent the ‘Yes on J’ campaign by a ratio of 8-to-1,” the coalition noted, pointing to $2.2 million in donations from industry leaders. They also criticized the campaign’s claims, particularly one that suggested Measure J would close 60 organic dairies—a misleading figure, as Sonoma County has only 50 dairies.

Following the vote, coalition members plan to gather for a protest on Saturday, with an open community forum scheduled for November 15 to discuss future action.
