The way baby elephants are raised is not much different from the way human babies are raised. Elephant parents help them find food, learn how to walk and use all of their limbs. Unfortunately, due to rampant poaching for the ivory trade, many elephant mothers are killed before they ever get the privilege of helping their young ones get their footing in life.
The baby elephant in the video above is one of the many orphaned elephants left in the wake of this destructive industry. At the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, caretakers must take on the role of mother elephant, helping these orphaned babies with simple things like developing the muscles in their trunk and learning to pick out soft greens to munch on!
Orphaned baby ellies never get the chance of experience the close relationship they would otherwise have had with their mothers in the wild. Thankfully, organizations like The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust work tirelessly to make life as good for these sweet creatures as possible. Without the love, care, and patience of these caretakers, who knows how these baby elephants would fend for themselves. To learn more about how you can help elephants, visit their website!
