Elephants are highly intelligent and, by nature, are affiliate. Both African and Asian female elephants form lasting bonds within a family of 4 – 10 elephants for their entire lives. And so, it was only a matter of time before elephants Shirley and Misty — both rescued from a life of captivity — became best of friends when they met at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
Watch as the two elephants use “touch” as a way to communicate and say “hello” in the video. Elephant trunks work double-duty; they serve as a nose for breathing as well as a hand for holding. See Shirley and Misty show affection for each other by leaning their trunks into each other, and watch as Shirley gives Misty’s tail a playful tug.
See these “social butterflies” as they communicate with each other. For more videos on Shirley, Misty, and other elephants at The Elephant Sanctuary, check out their Elecams here.
